“Reiwa” Japan’s new era name

On April 1, 2019 (Heisei 31), the Japan’s new era name was announced by Mr. Yoshihide Uga, the Cabinet Secretary General.

“Heisei (平成)” will be taken over by “Reiwa (令和)” on May 1st, 2019.

Reiwa was quoted from Manyoshu (万葉集), the 8th century anthology of Japanese poetry. Reiwa will be 248th Japanese era name since “Taika (大化)”.

Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe said that Reiwa was chosen to be a new Japanese era name, having hope that all Japanese would bloom their own flowers greatly for a hope for tomorrow.
